VOLUNTEERING WITH PGO

Enrich your professional practice and skills by volunteering with PGO!

PGO, like most self-regulatory organizations, relies on the knowledge and experience of volunteers to support the operation of its Committees, which perform vital functions for the organization with the support of staff. In fact, PGO is strongest with a diversity of Committee volunteers.

We have a number of Committees, each of which specializes in a particular area. They are summarized here, along with their Terms of Reference (ToR) and current Chairs. The ToRs of Statutory Committees are located in our By-Laws which may be accessed here. The Committees vary in their frequency of meetings and workload, depending on their area of focus and need at any given time.

Volunteering with PGO Committees

Volunteering in and of itself is a very rewarding experience. People volunteer to give back to their community and/or to their profession.

Volunteering with PGO has many benefits. It gives a registrant, a geoscientist-in-training, or a member of the public the opportunity to learn about the work of a self-regulatory body whose mandate is the protection of the public. Volunteering with PGO builds your knowledge and understanding of self-regulation and how a self-regulatory body is governed. It gives you insight on current and emerging issues and trends affecting the regulatory landscape and the regulated professions. It will broaden your understanding of the clear distinction between protecting public interest versus protecting the interest of members of an association or professional society. As a volunteer, you have access to a number of free training and orientation opportunities to develop into a leadership role such as being a committee vice chair, chair or a member of Council. Most importantly, as a volunteer, you have the opportunity to work with like-minded and highly experienced professionals who are leaders and experts in their field of work. As a collective, our volunteers serve the public of Ontario.
