My name is Michaela Kuuskman, Vice President of Finance and Projects and Senior Geologist at Orix Geoscience Inc. My career has focused on grassroots and brownfields exploration that includes field projects around Canada including Ontario, Saskatchewan, British Columbia, and Nunavut. I have been a Councillor-at-Large since 2022 and is the Co-Chair of the Complaints Committee and a member of the Audit Committee.
What motivated you to serve on the PGO Council?
Response: I was motivated to serve on the PGO Council because I believe in the importance of self-regulation for our profession. Being part of Council allows me to contribute directly to shaping the direction and standards of geoscience practice in Ontario. It's been a rewarding experience to learn more about the PGO's role and contribute to its governance.
How did your service on Council enhance your own professional development? What skills or qualities did you develop or strengthen through your service?
Response: Serving on the PGO Council has significantly enhanced my professional development. The comprehensive orientation and ongoing council meetings provide valuable training in governance, regulatory practices, strategic planning, and financial oversight. This experience has deepened my understanding of self-regulatory organizations and strengthened my board-level skills.
How did you balance your responsibilities on the board with your other commitments?
Response: The PGO Council's time commitment is structured around five annual full-day meetings, with preparatory materials provided in advance. Additionally, participation in one or two committees is expected, with varying time requirements. Recognizing that all members are volunteers, the PGO strives to conduct efficient meetings and accommodate individual schedules.
What was the most rewarding aspect of serving on the regulatory body?
Response: The most rewarding aspect has been contributing to the PGO's ongoing evolution, particularly in enhancing governance and aligning standards with national best practices. Being part of the Council during this critical period has provided a unique opportunity to directly influence these important changes.
