Each fall, Professional Geoscientists Ontario (PGO) begins its university outreach campaign, connecting directly with students to support their transition from academic study to professional practice. This initiative is made possible by the active participation of Ontario universities, allowing PGO to engage with students right on campus.
Led by the Registration Team (Eilidh Lewis, M.Sc., P.Geo. and Gabrielle Hosein, M.Sc., P.Geo.) and supported by PGO Regional Councillors, these outreach sessions provide students with practical guidance on the pathway to registration. They outline the knowledge requirements, work experience, and professional references that form the basis of the application process. Students also benefit from hearing the personal journeys of PGO volunteers as they offer valuable insights into the realities of working as a professional geoscientist.
By engaging early with PGO representatives, students gain clarity on academic requirements, the registration process, and the benefits of becoming a Geoscientist-in-Training (GIT) upon graduation. The outcome is clear - more students who meet the minimum knowledge requirements are registering as GITs, setting themselves on a structured pathway toward full P.Geo. designation. Early professional registration is further encouraged with the first year of GIT annual dues waived for those who apply within six months of graduation. As well, GIT registration provides accessibility to PGO's professional community and encourages early professional engagement.
Our outreach events reflect PGO’s commitment to encouraging the next generation of geoscientists to pursue full licensure.
David Leng, P.Geo., Councillor-at-Large and long-time volunteer, attests to the value of attending: “Through the outreach program, I've met hundreds of students across Ontario. It's an excellent way for them to network with PGO staff and interact with practicing geoscientists. Students always have questions, and in-person contact at outreach is a unique opportunity to get answers. It’s a great foundation for early-stage network building so don't miss out! When outreach comes to your university, be sure to sign up and get connected.”
Clayton Sereres, P.Geo., South West Regional Councillor adds: “Engaging with students every fall is one of my favourite parts of serving on Council. Sharing my professional story and journey to becoming a P.Geo., including the challenges, really highlights how important it is to have clarity on required courses. It not only helps students avoid unnecessary setbacks, but also opens their eyes and inspires them to pursue geoscience careers that go beyond traditional paths.”
Outreach dates are posted on our student page at https://www.pgo.ca/forstudents. Please check the page often, as the schedule will be updated as sessions are confirmed.
