Welcoming Our New Council Members

Portrait of Andrew Smith Andrew SmithNorth West Regional Councillor

Andrew Smith is a Professional Geoscientist with a broad background in both mining and exploration geology. He holds a B.Sc. (Hons) in Earth Sciences from Memorial University of Newfoundland. His career began underground with Vale in Northern Manitoba, where he gained hands-on experience in production and resource development. He later transitioned to regional exploration and feasibility-stage work with Wyloo in Ontario’s Ring of Fire. His work has focused primarily on Ni-Cu-PGE systems, and he’s been involved across the full mining lifecycle, from grassroots prospecting to advanced exploration, resource modeling, and mine planning.

Roger Phillips has over 20 years of experience as an environmental geoscience consultant and academic, with a focus on applied geomorphology, natural hazards, river restoration, and surface water resources. He works across a range of industry sectors including municipal infrastructure, oil and gas midstream pipelines, and mining, as well as a range of Canadian geographies with P.Geo. registration in Ontario, Alberta, and British Columbia. Roger holds a B.Sc. Honours from Simon Fraser University, an M.Sc. from York University, and a Ph.D. from the University of Toronto, where he has been teaching physical geography courses as an instructor since 2011.

Roger began volunteering for PGO on the Registration Committee in 2016 and has continued to contribute since then, serving on Council from 2017-2020, with ongoing committee participation including most recently chairing the Registration Committee from 2023-2025. Roger was awarded a Fellow of Geoscientists Canada designation in 2023 for his years of service and noteworthy contribution of initiating the formation of the Geomorphology Subcommittee at PGO in 2017.

David Leng, P.Geo. is President and CEO of RGCI. David is a professional geoscientist with more than 25 years of mining industry experience. David has held technical roles involving geochemical exploration, project evaluation and financing with several reporting issuers. David holds an honours degree in Geology from McMaster University, is a professional geoscientist with the Professional Geoscientists of Ontario, and is also a member of the Association of Applied Geochemists. David has been a PGO volunteer since 2013, was elected to PGO council in 2015 to 2023 during which time he chaired the Governance Committee, remains an active participant in PGO’s mentoring program, regularly hosted PGO short courses, and attended many student outreach events.

Angie has over 17 years of experience in environmental geoscience and development hydrogeology, including municipal peer review, hydrogeological assessments, permit to take water (PTTW) applications, wetland studies, groundwater and surface water impact assessments, pumping tests, water balance, Phase I/II environmental site assessment (ESA) and designated substance building surveys. She is the founder and CEO of Wellington Hydrogeology Ltd., a certified diverse supplier and women’s business enterprise with WBE Canada.

She is a licensed P.Geo. with PGO and APEGA and serves on the PGO Complaints Committee. She also volunteers on the Waterloo-Wellington Children's Groundwater Festival Organizing Committee and Programming Subcommittee in addition to the Conestoga College Environmental Engineering Applications Project Mentor Program, Program Advisory Committee and Project Subcommittee. She is also a member of the International Association of Hydrogeologists (IAH).

Angie holds an honours B.Sc. in Biological Science from the University of Guelph, a M.Sc. in Earth Science (Hydrogeology) from the University of Waterloo, and a post-graduate certificate in Environmental Engineering Applications (Co-op) from Conestoga College Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning.

Portrait of John Hogg John HoggCouncillor-at-Large

John Hogg earned his BSc in Geology from McMaster University and is a Professional Geoscientist registered in Ontario, the Northwest Territories, and Nunavut. He also holds a Certified Petroleum Geologist designation from the American Association of Petroleum Geologists.

John has served two terms as a Councilor with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta, and two terms as a Director of Geoscientists Canada. He has also held the positions of President of the Canadian Society of Petroleum Geologists and President of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists.

Throughout his career, John has been recognized with several prestigious awards, including the President’s Award and Honorary Membership from the Canadian Society of Petroleum Geologists, as well as the Distinguished Service Award and Honorary Membership from the American Association of Petroleum Geologists.

John's career has been largely dedicated to exploring energy resources in the Canadian Arctic and Atlantic Canada. Over the past four decades, he has presented numerous technical papers on regional geology, basin tectonics, frontier exploration, and most recently, natural hydrogen exploration.

Michaela Kuuskman, who served a three-year term as Councillor-at-Large, is now serving a three-year term as North East Regional Councillor.
